Sample type:
In order to ensure accurate counts for nematodes in soil, it's best to sample using a 2 cm soil corer and take soil samples down to 10 cm.
Ideally, you want to submit at least 10 core samples, but 20-30 (depending on the size of the green) would be best. If you're concerned about leaving holes in your turf, you can return the upper 2.5 cm of turf and thatch to the ground (you may wish to back-fill the holes with topdressing mix first).
Send samples in plastic bags or bags specifically for soil samples -- please, no paper bags!
There are two ways to sample, depending on the desired information:
- When symptoms are present:
If you are attempting to determine if the symptoms are due to nematode infestation, you will want to submit two separate soil samples – one from the symptomatic areas and one from healthy portions of the green. Ideally, you should collect a number of cores from each area. Be sure to label which cores come from the affected areas and which are from the healthy turf.
- When symptoms are not present, or are very mild:
For this method of sampling, take cores from throughout the green, in a distinct and equidistant pattern. This method will determine the overall population levels on your turf and can give you an idea of the potential for damage later in the season.
