OMAFRA Turfgrass Report for April 28 - May 9

Proposed Ontario Cosmetic Pesticide Ban Comment Period
On April 22nd the Ontario government
announced  their intention to ban the "cosmetic" use of pesticides in the province.

Interested individuals are invited to comment on the proposed legislation by visiting the Environmental Registry. Here you will also find a link to a draft of the proposed legislation, as well as the draft lists of proposed  products and ingredients that will not be permitted for cosmetic use. "Cosmetic" is defined simply as "non-essential". Although golf courses have been granted an exemption from the ban, a number of the products that are on the list would appear to be golf course specific products so at this point it is a little confusing. Hopefully by the time the final details are presented, these issues will be resolved.

Anyone who has an opinion on the proposed legislation or feels they will be affected by the ban are encouraged to submit comments via the Environmental Registry website. Please forward this information to any interested clients. Deadline for submission of comments is May 22, 2008.
