IPM Exam Preparation Courses

The GTI is working with the Ontario Golf Superintendents Association to offer a number of IPM examination preparation courses across the province. For more information about course dates and locations, please visit the OGSA website. In order to continue to use pesticides beyond April 22, 2010, Ontario golf courses must be IPM registered, a process which includes having an accredited IPM Agent on staff. For more details on the IPM accreditation process, visit the IPM Accreditation Program website.

Bill Campbell Honoured at OTS

Retired sod producer and long time friend of the GTI Bill Campbell was honoured at the Ontario Turfgrass Symposium opening session. Bill was presented with a commemorative desk clock by GTI Advisory Board Chair Thom Charters. Bill was instrumental in the planning and fund raising effort that resulted in the construction of the G.M. Frost Research & Education Centre as well as the surrounding research lands. He served many years on the GTI Advisory Board before stepping down to enjoy his retirement as well as serve his community through the Brantford General Hospital Board.

Superintendent in Residence Lecture to Cover Organic Golf Course Management

The 2010 Superintendent in Residence is Jeff Carlson, CGCS, Superintendent of the Vineyard Golf Club.  The Vineyard Golf Club, an 18-hole course located on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, has been recognized as one of the only organically conceived, constructed and maintained golf courses in the United States. For his on-going work at The Vineyard Golf Club, Jeff received in 2008 The Golf Course Superintendent’s Association’s highest environmental award, The President’s Award for Environmental Stewardship.

The title of his public lecture is The Vineyard Golf Club - Seven Years of Organic Management. It is a progress report citing the challenges, struggles and successes of managing a golf course without the benefit of traditional synthetic pesticides. The public lecture will be available as a webcast. In addition to the public lecture, Carlson will also spend time interacting with faculty and students in the Associate Diploma in Turfgrass Management program.

The public lecture will be held on Monday, March 29th at 5:30 pm at the Cutten Club, 190 College Avenue East in Guelph. The lecture will be followed by a reception. The webcast can be accessed by following this link.
